Gavin & Stacey: Where are they now?
Written by Dan Williams on 1st January 2019
It’s been 9 years since the final episode of Gavin & Stacey aired on TV, so we decided to take a look at where the cast are today.
Gavin (Mathew Horne)
Since Gavin & Stacey, Mat (Mathew) has starred in a number of TV shows and films. Many fans will know Mat more recently from the Jack Whitehall comedy series Bad Education that aired on BBC in which Mat played headmaster of Abbey Grove, Shaquille Fraser.
Horne also reprised his role as Jamie Taylor in Catherine Tate’s Nan which aired as a four episode series.
Stacey (Joanna Page)
Joanna has featured in a number of TV shows, theatre shows, film and radio advertisements. Although she is well known as Stacey, Joanna has also starred in programmes such as White Van Man, Doctor Who, and The Syndicate.
You may also remember Joannas familar voice featuring on the Sun Bingo advert.
Smithy (James Corden)
Along with fellow Gavin & Stacey star Ruth Jones, Corden also co-created and co-wrote the show.
Corden is known as Gavin’s best friend in the show, and later becomes love interest for Jones’ character Nessa.
Outside of the show, James has kept busy with a number of projects in TV, Film, Theatre, and even Music Videos.
Starring as Fletch in Lesbian Vampire Killers back in 2009, Jinks in Gulliver’s Travels later in 2010, lending his voice as Biggie in Trolls during 2016, and more recently as Peter Rabbit in 2018.
In 2010, Corden starred as Craig Owens in two episodes of Doctor Who, and later went on to present A League of Their Own on Sky One with team captains Freddie Flintoff and Jamie Redknapp.
From 2015, James began presenting The Late Late Show with James Corden on CBS which he still continues to host. In the show, Corden runs a feature called Carpool Karaoke which many fans say comes from a previous scene in Gavin & Stacey.
Nessa (Ruth Jones)
Oh, what’s occurring? Nessa, played by Ruth Jones is Stacey’s oldest and closest friend, who is also from Barry, South Wales. Nessa has several celebrity connections, such as MP John Prescott, and later begins a relationship with Dave “Coaches” Lloyd Gooch. She also has a baby with Smithy in Series 2, Neil Noel Edmund Smith.
Outside of Gavin & Stacey, Jones has presented a number of chatshow specials on BBC, written and starred in comedy-drama Stella which aired on Sky One and also starred in a number of adverts for supermarket Tesco.
Mick (Larry Lamb)
Larry is of course known as the father of Gavin in Gavin & Stacey, but as well as the show, Larry is known for many others including EastEnders where he played Archie Mitchell from 2008 until Christmas 2009 where his character was killed in a highly popular whodunnit’ storyline.
Larry regularly features on many other popular TV shows as guest/ pannelist such as Celebrity Juice, Would I Lie to You, Loose Women, and The One Show. In 2016, Larry was a campmate in I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here where he finished seventh in a total of twelve campmates.
Pam (Alison Steadman)
Pamela Andrea “Pam” Shipman (née Gryglaszewska) is lead character Gavins mum, and wife of Mick Shipman (played by Larry Lamb). She can be eccentric in her focuses, and often rambles and forgets what she is saying, such as pretending to be vegetarian when she’d forgotten to ask if the Wests had any special dietary requirements.
Outside of Gavin & Stacey, Steadman is known for Stage, TV, Radio and Film.
In 2018, Steadman appeared in ITV mini series ‘Butterfly‘ and was joined by a number of stars including Emmett J. Scanlan (Hollyoaks, The Fall, Girlfriends), Sean McGinley (Paula, On a Clear Day) and child actor Callum Booth-Ford.
Butterfly is about the acrimonious relationship between separated parents, Vicky (Anna Friel) and Stephen (Emmett J. Scanlan), and their division in opinion over how to support their gender variant child, Max (Callum Booth-Ford).
In December 2009, Steadman starred in the late Mike Stott‘s My Mad Grandad on BBC Radio 4.
Bryn (Rob Brydon)
“Uncle Bryn” is Stacey’s protective, yet naive and bizarre uncle, and Gwen’s brother-in-law.
Bryn’s brother, Trevor, Stacey’s father died previous to the series, and he helped the family cope. Bryn has a difficult relationship with his nephew, Jason, due to something happening at a ‘fishing trip’ they went on together.
Brydon is known for his Film, TV and Radio appearances. In TV, Brydon is the presenter of BBC show Would I Lie to You? which he has presented since Series 3 in 2009 alongside team captains David Mitchell and Lee Mack.
In 2017, Brydon lent his voice to Lee Mack‘s BBC show Not Going Out where he played a character called George.
Rob is also no stranger to Film, where he has starred in a number of roles over the years. In 2009, Brydon was the voice of Snake in The Gruffalo, and again in The Gruffalo’s Child in 2011. He also appeared in David Williams’ TV adapted comedy-drama Gangsta Granny as Mr. Parker, and as Inspector Lestrade in Holmes and Watson in 2018.
Gwen (Melanie Walters)
Gwen is Stacey’s caring, widowed mother who also has an older son, Jason, who lives in Spain. She is known for regularly making omelettes.
Walters is known for her appearances in Film, TV, and Theatre. Walters appeared as Judie Bevan in the coming-of-age comedy-drama 2010 film, Submarine. She has also starred in 2011 Welsh film Resistance as Helen Roberts, and as Bethan in 2014 film High Tide.
In TV, Walters has appeared on and off as minor character Bonnie Bevan in Hollyoaks, she has also starred in fellow Gavin & Stacey co-star Ruth Jones‘ Sky One show Stella where she is credited as Sonographer.
Closer to home, Walters starred as Fairy Godmother in pantomime Cinderella at the Riverfront Arts Centre in Newport.
So, there we go. That’s what the cast of Gavin & Stacey have been up to since the final episode aired on BBC in 2010.
Will they ever make a return to our screens? The answer is most likely to be no ever since James Corden has become a hit with his US show The Late Late Show with James Corden.
Although, who knows, we may one day see a one-off return to Barry Island for a catchup with both the Shipman and the West families.
