Torfaen AM launches essay challenge for pupils under lockdown

Written by on 3rd May 2020

Torfaen Assembly Member Lynne Neagle is launching an essay challenge under the banner of Tomorrow’s Torfaen for school-aged children in Torfaen.

The AM hopes the project will provide an opportunity to create a bit of ‘everyday normality’ in the lives of children in Torfaen during these days of home schooling and harassed parents!

Lynne, who has represented Torfaen for the 20 years since devolution began in 1999, said:

‘These days of lockdown are challenging for all of us but they must be particularly hard for harassed parents trying to homeschool their children.

As chair of the National Assembly’s Children, Young People and Education Committee, I place a lot of importance on the emotional and mental wellbeing of young people, so I thought an essay challenge might provide an opportunity for a bit of everyday normality.’

The title of the essay challenge is: My Covid-19 Superhero is …? Secondary school pupils are invited to submit up to 800 words and primary school pupils up to 400 words. Younger primary school aged children can submit at picture of their Covid-19 Superhero. The essay challenge will run untill the end of May.

It is the intention that some entries or possibly extracts from them will be shared on Lynne Neagle’s social media and, once things return to normal, hopefully in a published document. It is also planned to invite some of the pupils that take part to the Senedd or visit them in their schools, if more appropriate.
