Torfaen Christmas waste & recycling collections
Written by Dan Williams on 14th December 2020
Update from Torfaen County Borough Council regarding waste and recycling collections over the Christmas period.
The council is pleased to announce that this year we will be collecting waste and recycling on Bank Holiday Monday (28th December), which in previous years wouldn’t have occurred.
Councillor Mandy Owen, Executive member for the Environment, said: “
We have listened to our residents, and other than those who would normally have collections on 25 December and 1 January, all collections will be on their normal day.
Due to this change we are asking all residents to share the information with family and friends, so no one misses out on a collection. We want to make sure that everyone’s Christmas waste and recycling is collected so there’s one less thing for people to worry about.
This year has been tough on everyone because of Covid-19, and I would like to thank residents for their patience with waste and recycling crews. They have faced challenges like never before. I would also like to thank the waste and recycling crews for their dedication throughout this tough year – thank you.
The revised collection dates are as follows:
Normal Day of Collection | Day of Collection |
Thursday 24 December 2020 | Thursday 24 December 2020 |
Friday 25 December 2020 | Sunday 27 December 2020 |
Monday 28 December 2020 | Monday 28 December 2020 |
Tuesday 29 December 2020 | Tuesday 29 December 2020 |
Wednesday 30 December 2020 | Wednesday 30 December 2020 |
Thursday 31 December 2020 | Thursday 31 December 2020 |
Friday 1 January 2021 | Saturday 2 January 2021 |
Please note that between Thursday 24 December and Saturday 2 January 2021, all waste and recycling collections will start at 6am. Therefore, all residents need to make sure their waste is placed out before 6am on their collection day.
Separating your waste
To help collection crews it would be helpful is residents separated out their recycling as much as possible into different containers. This not only speeds up collections because crews don’t have to manually sort items by hand, but it reduces the amount of waste crews have to handle which would be very much appreciated during the current climate
Extra waste
We appreciate that there will be extra waste produced over the festive period, even after residents have recycled as much as they can. So, to help manage this we will collect up to two extra black bags of rubbish per household on the first purple lidded bin waste collection only after Christmas. Please make sure the bags are placed next to the purple-lidded bin.
We will be extremely busy collecting your waste and recycling during the Christmas and New Year period so we would like to advise residents to leave their bins, boxes and bags out until they have been emptied.
We will only return to empty bins/boxes/bags if we have missed.
Wrapping paper
Due to companies currently not accepting wrapping paper for recycling, please put it in the purple-lidded bin.
Christmas tree recycling
If you have a real Christmas tree, once it’s come to the end of its life it can be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centre to be shredded and used as compost.
Christmas Cards
Please put Christmas cards in your blue cardboard bag for recycling.
Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) and van permit scheme booking arrangements
The HWRC will be closed on Christmas Day 25th December, Boxing Day 26th December and New Year’s Day 1st January.
Booking a car slot or a van permit for the HWRC can be made up to 10 days prior to your scheduled visit.
Prior to Christmas, bookings can be arranged as normal. However, Call Torfaen will be closed between 25th December and 3rd January so you will be unable to phone us to make a booking. During this period you can still book a visit by using our online booking form.
