Housing plans approved for former Caerleon University site

Written by on 6th January 2021

The site in Caerleon was previously occupied by University of South Wales.

Part of the site is used by the Netflix series, Sex Education. The third series is set to air over the coming months in 2021.

The planning committee for Newport City Council has approved the plans for 219 houses on the site which will be developed by Redrow Homes.

A planning application which would’ve saw 310 houses built on the site was previously rejected in 2018 due to traffic and air quality concerns.

These concerns were put forward to the planning committee, however, the planning application which was submitted by Redrow Homes was approved.

Sources suggest that the three local ward councillors all expressed their concerns over the plans with Cllr Jason Hughes confirming that residents had raised concerns over the application, and added that around 200 people had signed a petition against the proposed plans for the site.

The former University of South Wales site has more recently been used for Netflix’ Sex Education series.

Towards the end of 2020, it was revealed that filming had recommenced for the Netflix show Sex Education which for the first two series has featured scenes shot on location at the former University of South Wales Caerleon campus.

Full details on the third series are yet to be revealed, however it is believed that the new series will also feature scenes shot at the former campus site which serves as the fictional Moordale Secondary School.

The series features stars such as Asa Butterfield as an insecure teenager and Gillian Anderson as his mother. Ncuti GatwaEmma MackeyConnor SwindellsAimee Lou Wood and Kedar Williams-Stirling co-star.

Netflix has also revealed that the third series will see the introduction of new characters in a tweet which was posted in September 2020.
