Plans submitted to repaint iconic Park Gates

Torfaen Council have submitted plans to repaint the iconic Victorian Pontypool Park gates, located in Pontymoile, changing from the existing green shade to matte black with additional gold coloured accents featuring on the columns and top of some railings.
The iconic Grade II listed gates are thought to be around 300 years old and were painted the current shade of green (known as ‘racing green’) since 2009 after Cadw, the Welsh historic environment body approved the re-paint. Photos show that the gates have been seen in racing green as well as the proposed colour in previous years.
The gates are said to have been gifted to Major John Hanbury of Pontypool Park (1664-1734) by
his friend Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough (1660-1744) between 1722-1734.
The council stated there was no evidence to suggest the gates were originally green during the Victorian era, hence the colour change. They have also warned that refurbishment is required due to the current condition of the gates.
As of the 21st March 2025, a decision on these submitted plans has not been made.
